Malala Yousafzai, 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, UN Messenger of Peace and co-founder of the Malala Fund, attends "Spotlight session 5: Advancing gender equality and girls’ and women’s empowerment in and through education” held on the third day of the Transforming Education Summit 2022.

The Transforming Education Summit was being convened in response to a global crisis in education – one of equity and inclusion, quality and relevance. Often slow and unseen, this crisis is having a devastating impact on the futures of children and youth worldwide. The Summit provides a unique opportunity to elevate education to the top of the global political agenda and to mobilize action, ambition, solidarity and solutions to recover pandemic-related learning losses and sow the seeds to transform education in a rapidly changing world.

Headline International Literacy Day in South Sudan
Caption Description The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) partnered with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), InterSOS, Ibis, Norwegian Refugee Council, and the South Sudan Education Cluster, to bring International Literacy Day to the Protection of Civilians (POC) site for internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the UN House in Juba, South Sudan. South Sudan has among the lowest literacy rates in the world, with roughly 27% of the adult population being able to read or write (15% of women and 39% of men). This year’s theme is ""Literacy and Sustainable Development"" and focuses on the importance of youth literacy as a vehicle to prevent conflict and promote peace and sustainable development. Today’s event featured reading corners, in which children read along with teachers, as well as testimonials from learners and an award presentation.
