Geregee or Golden Paidz
Caption Description
The geregee or golden paidz is a gift from the Government of Mongolia to the United Nations. Throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, the Mongols used metal tablets called “geregee” to identify official and envoys. With the “geregee” officials and envoys were allowed to move freely, were provided with food and horses, and were treated with respect and courtesy - as such, they served the same function as a contemporary diplomatic passport. The geregee is located on the second floor of the Conference Building.
