Headline Development of Resources: Drilling for Oil in Venezuela
Caption Description The lifeline of many poor countries is the export of raw materials. If that line is to hold firm, these countries must have stable and equitable prices for the commodities they sell to the industrial world. The resources of land and sea, however, must not be exploited for nationalistic ends, but for the benefit of all mankind.
Workers drilling for oil on Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. This is one of over 4,500 oil rigs on Lake Maracaibo which is estimated to contain abundant reserves of oil. While Venezuela is one of the world's leading exporters of petroleum, it has also stressed industrial development. [Exact date unknown]
