A woman in El Fasher, North Darfur, uses a Water Roller for easily and efficiently carrying water. With its large drum capacity (usually 75 litres), the device frees women and children from having to spend a large portion of every day dedicated to collecting water for their households. The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) has distributed some 3,000 such rollers across Darfur.
In defiance of numerous UN decisions the South African Government continues to refuse to withdraw from Namibia It has imposed its policy of apartheid and will not allow the UN Council for Namibia to take over and guide the territory towards independence. The UN Council for Namibia insists that genuine independence is only possible under UN auspices.

18,000 more people reportedly recently arrived in Nyal payam (county) in search of safety and security due to the conflict between the South Sudan government and the armed opposition forces. Fighting resumed last August despite a signed peace accord, forcing South Sudanese to flee in search of safety, assistance, and protection, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Together, the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) provide assistance with food and nutrition, as well as childhood education.

Headline Water is Vital for Life
Caption Description The world is now beginning to realize that water, which was once considered to be an abundant resource, is becoming scarce in several geographical areas. Of the total volume of 1.4 thousand million cubic kilometres of earth's water, only 2.8 per cent is fresh water. But three-quarters of this is locked in the polar ice-caps and in glaciers. The world is in unanimous agreement on the need to save and conserve water. A World Plan of Action was drawn up for this purpose at a major UN Conference in Argentina in 1977. Among other things the Plan calls for adequate supplies of clean and safe water for everyone by 1990.
