Advance units of a new UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) began moving into Southern Lebanon on 22 March 1978. The purpose of the Force, spelled out in a Security Council Resolution of 19 March (Resolution 425) is to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces, restore international peace and security, and assist the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area.

At the end of October 2011, the world population will pass the 7 billion mark. This year’s annual report by UNFPA, the UN population fund, highlights the remarkable trends behind the numbers: roughly one in two people now lives in an urban area, the global average life span is 68 years, and close to a billion people are 60 and over. The report sees the possibilities in 7 billion – for fostering sustainable cities, productive labour forces, and generations young and old that contribute to the well-being of economies and societies.
For some time to come the poorer countries of the world will have to rely on agriculture to raise their living standards and supply the capital they need to create industries. Agricultural production must therefore be increased. This requires tractors, fertilizers, new and better seeds, vast irrigation schemes, land reforms.

British Commando units attached to the United Nations forces in Korea have made several daring raids deep into enemy territory. During one such raid, Commandos of the 41st Royal British Marines swarm ashore from amtracks 8 miles south of Songjin, North Korea, where they destroyed a stretch of railroad track breaking an important enemy supply line.

Caption Description The United Nations Peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was established by action of the UN Security Council to help prevent a recurrence of hostilities in the Republic of Cyprus. The Force will be stationed in the country, under the terms of the Security Council resolution, for a period of three months and will be composed of contingents from Canada, Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
