Sierra Leone Fights Yaws
Caption Description
An intensive campaign to eradicate yaws - one of the major contagious diseases of tropical Africa - is being waged with penicillin by the Government of Sierra Leone with the help of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The WHO assigned a medical officer and a laboratory technician to conduct surveys, treat patients, organize measures to prevent this disease and other communicable diseases, like leprosy, and, in addition, train auxiliary personnel for the rural centres. UNICEF supplies medical equipment and transport as its contribution to the project.
A scene in one of the hospital laboratories where research is being carried out on yaws and other communicable diseases.
