Land Reclamation Project in Hokkaido
Caption Description
Under a project being carried out by the Agricultural Land Development Machinery Public Corporation, some 800 families are to be settled on 27,730 acres of former wastelands of peat and volcanic ashes which the Corporation is converting into dairy farmlands. The International Bank loaned the Corporation $4.3 millions to finance importation of dairy cattle and heavy earth-moving and farming equipment for the project which is expected to be completed in 1963.
In a classroom at the No. 2 Tokotan School in the Konsen Plains of Eastern Hokkaido, a teacher helps a young student to master proper writing techniques. The school is one of two provided for the convenience of children whose parents have been settled on pilot farms in the area.
