The General Assembly held a special meeting today to observe International Anti-Apartheid Year. In the course of the special meeting, gold medals were presented to seven persons for distinguished service against apartheid, and statements were made by the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the Prime Minister of Jamaica and the Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid. The recipients of the awards: Reverend Canon L. John Collins, Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral and President of the International Defense and Aid Fund for Southern Africa; Michael Manley, Prime Minister of Jamaica; the late General Murtala Mohamed, former Head of State of Nigeria; the late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister of India; the late Kwame Nkrumah, former President of Ghana; Olof Palme, former Prime Minister of Sweden; and the late Paul Robeson, black American singer, actor and leader in the struggle against racism.
