Headline Haiti: Background
Caption Description Haiti is probably the most densely populated and poorest country in the Americas. On 1 June 1995, the minimum daily wage was raised from 15 to 16 gourdes (about US$ 2.40), the first time since 1979 that the minimum wage has been increased.
Many Haitian have taken to private enterprise, running small businesses on the street, in order to earn money. Here, in Port-au-Prince, two women have set up a food stand.
