Caption Description The United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) was established to verify fulfillment of the provisions of the agreement on the definitive cease-fire, signed by the Government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG) on 4 December 1996, including the formal cessation of hostilities, the separation of forces, and the demobilization of URNG combatants in areas organized as follows: human rights; indigenous affairs; social, economic and agrarian; strengthening of civilian power and role of the army in a democratic society; and resettlement and integration.
