AIDS, the Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome, is the late stage of infection caused by a virus, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Globally an estimated 34 million people are now living with HIV/AIDS. Of this number, 14 million are women and 1.2 are children under fourteen years of age.

Headline Joint Press Briefing by WHO/UNDP on Coordinated Approach to Fighting AIDS 
Caption Description At the press briefing Dr. Halfdan Mahler (right), Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), and William H. Draper III (left), Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), signed an agreement to form an alliance expanding the global impact of the struggle against AIDS.  At centre is Jean Ripert, Director-General for Development and International Economic Co-operation.  The alliance, which was initiated by WHO, is an attempt to deal with the AIDS problem at the country level.  It combines the expertise of WHO as coordinator of international health policy and scientific and technical matters relating to health with that of UNDP, in the field of socio-economic development.
