A woman in El Fasher, North Darfur, uses a Water Roller for easily and efficiently carrying water. With its large drum capacity (usually 75 litres), the device frees women and children from having to spend a large portion of every day dedicated to collecting water for their households. The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) has distributed some 3,000 such rollers across Darfur.
In defiance of numerous UN decisions the South African Government continues to refuse to withdraw from Namibia It has imposed its policy of apartheid and will not allow the UN Council for Namibia to take over and guide the territory towards independence. The UN Council for Namibia insists that genuine independence is only possible under UN auspices.

18,000 more people reportedly recently arrived in Nyal payam (county) in search of safety and security due to the conflict between the South Sudan government and the armed opposition forces. Fighting resumed last August despite a signed peace accord, forcing South Sudanese to flee in search of safety, assistance, and protection, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Together, the World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) provide assistance with food and nutrition, as well as childhood education.

Headline Human Settlements - The Places Where People Live and Work
Caption Description One of the main purposes of the UN Conference-Exposition on Human Settlements to be held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 1976, will bring to the world's attention the nature and relative importance of the problems of human settlements against a background of widespread concern for the whole of our earthly environment - natural and man-made. Two of the most critical problems of society today - made increasingly urgent by the rapid rise in the world's population - are the shortage of adequate housing and the deterioration of the conditions under which people live and work. Many cities, particularly in the poorer countries of the world, are unable to provide adequate housing, food, sanitation, work and other essential services for all the people flocking to them in search of a better life. Rural settlements are being abandoned and neglected. Urbanisation is not an evil in itself. The process can be guided and converted into a positive factor in development. Economic development and improvement in the quality of human life need not be competing alternatives. They are both vital and in the common interest of all mankind. The UN Vancouver Conference will endeavour to stimulate thinking along those lines.
