About 2.5 million people face a famine in Sudan. The people displaced by the war in Southern Sudan are being helped by Operation Lifeline Sudan, a consortium of the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF and 35 non-governmental organizations. The nine year relief effort has saved thousands of lives and the World Food Programme says it will need 54 million to provide emergency aid until April 1999.

Headline Refugee Camp Clearance Programme in Elizabethville (Congo)
Caption Description United Nations officials are giving top priority to a remarkable humanitarian operation to liquidate the aqualid, crowded refugee camp on the outskirts of this city, where about 50,000 refugees - mostly Balubas - have been living under UN protection since early last autumn. During the past month, thousands of refugees have boarded trains and planes and headed for a new life in the traditional tribal lands of their forefathers, hundreds of miles to the north and to the northwest.

Here, some of the refugees are seen at the railroad station as they prepared to leave for their new homes. [June, 1962]
