Headline
Andean Indian Programme in Colombia
Caption Description
The Andean Indian programme, designed to raise the living standards of the indigenous populations of the Altiplano region and integrate them into the economic and social life of their respective countries, was extended in 1960 to include Colombia and portions of Chile and Argentina, in addition to Bolivia, Ecuardor and Peru, where the project had already been underway since 1953. Under the leadership of the International Labour Organization (ILO), other UN agencies, such as the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the UN educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the World Health Organization (WHO), are assisting the Governments concerned by providing advisory services for the programme.
These school children are drinking milk supplied by Proyecto Integrado Nutricion Aplicada (PINA), a Government-sponsored project to improve Indian eating habits and hygiene which was established with the help of WHO, FAO and UNICEF. [May 1966]
