Headline ICJ Deliberations on Western Sahara
Caption Description The narrow strip of desert in north-west Africa known as Western or Spanish Sahara is presently ruled as an overseas province of Spain. Spain has recently indicated its willingness to transfer power to the people of Sahara. But the transfer of power has been complicated by the conflicting claims and interests of three neighboring countries: Algeria, Mauritania and Morocco. In December 1974, the UN General Assembly asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to give an advisory opinion on the historical aspects of Morocco's and Mauritania's claims to the Territory to help it make its recommendations on the best way to proceed with the decolonization process. The Court began consideration of written and oral testimony from Member States in January 1975 and now has the matter under deliberation. The question will be taken up again at the Assembly's 30th session beginning in September.
The International Court is seen in session at the Hague.  Left to right:  Registrar G. Aquarone; Judge Ad Hoc Boni; Judges Nagendra Singh, Eduardo Jimenez de Arechaga, Federico de Castro, Hardy C. Dillard, Sture Petren, Andre Gros, Vice-President Fouad Ammoun, President Manfred Lachs, Isaac Forster, Cesar Bengzon, Charles D. Onyeama, Louis Ignacio-Pinto, Platon D. Morozov, Sir Humphrey Waldock and Jose Maria Ruda.
