Headline Nursing Advisory Services in Afghanistan
Caption Description The Government of Afghanistan, with the assistance of the World Health Organization (WHO), is strengthening and expanding its health services at the national, local and institutional level. As part of this programme it is training a larger number of nurses and midwives in order to provide more adequate nursing care particularly in rural areas. The Chaurassia Rural Health Sub-centre serves a population of about 10,000 people from scattered villages. The sub-centre provides home visits to some 2000 places and operates six days a week.
Here, Mrs. Gowertaj, an auxiliary nurse midwife, is seen taking blood specimen from a new expectant mother. Mrs. Gowertaj is one of the first such nurses to be trained by the WHO. She helps the doctor who comes once a week, and does follow-up home visits. [December, 1970]
