Headline Netherlands Gift to the United Nations
Caption Description Secretary-General Dag Dag Hammarskjöld today accepted on behalf of the United Nations the gift of a Foucault pendulum from the Netherlands Government. The presentation was made by the Netherlands Foreign Minister, Dr. J .M.A.H. Luns, at a ceremony, attended by Assembly President Maza and members of the Netherlands delegation, in the public lobby of the General Assembly building where the pendulum is suspended 75 feet above the floor. The pendulum is made up of a 200-pound gold-plated sphere, suspended from the ceiling by a stainless steel wire, and offers visible proof of the earth's rotation on it's axis.
