Jordan Signs Convention on Suppression and Punishment of Apartheid
Caption Description
Jordan today signed the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid. The Convention was approved by the General Assembly in resolution 3068(XXVIII) of 30 November 1973. The Convention provides that international criminal responsibility shall apply to individuals, members of organizations and institutions, and representatives of a State, whether residing in the State in which the acts are perpetrated or elsewhere. Persons charged could be tried by any State party to the Convention. The parties would also be required to report periodically to a special three-member group of the Commission on Human Rights the measures they take to implement the Convention.
The Permanent Representative of Jordan at the United Nations, Ambassador Sherif Abdul Hamid Sharaf, is seen signing the Convention today. Looking on are Mr. P. Giblain (left), Chief of the Treaty Section, UN office of Legal Affairs, and Mr. Erik Suy, Under-Secretary-General UN Office of Legal Affairs.
