World Food Situation
Caption Description
The world is today facing a food shortage of near critical proportions, and chronic malnutrition is widespread. Stocks of basic foodstuffs are at a low level. World market prices for cereals, fertilizers and petroleum products are greatly inflated and weigh heavily on the slender foreign exchange reserves of developing countries that must import these essentials. Fast population growth continues, particularly in those developing regions that currently are experiencing great difficulties in increasing their food supplies. A United Nations World Food Conference to be held in Rome in November 1974 is expected to concern itself first with a detailed assessment of the world food supply problem in the next ten years and beyond, and then turn to concrete proposals for improving food supply, distribution and food aid.
