UN Mission Supervises Elections in Equatorial Guinea Prior to Country's Independence
Caption Description
The Territory of Equatorial Guinea consists of two provinces: Rio Muni, which lies on the west coast of Africa and is bordered by the Federal Republic of Cameroon and by Gabon, and Fernando Poo, an island in the Gulf of Guinea. The total population of the Territory is estimated at 260,000, of which about three-quarters are on the mainland. This total includes two large indigenous groups - the Bubis, living mainly in Fernando Poo and the Fangs, found mainly in Rio Muni - as well as a large non-indigenous African population, mainly from Nigeria. The country will become independent from Spain on Saturday, 12 October, 1968. Elections for the Presidency, the Assembly and the two Provincial Councils of the new Republic were held on 22 September, followed by a run-off election for the Presidency on 29 September, all of which were supervised by a UN Mission.
Voters await the arrival of Bonifacio Ondo Edu, one of the Presidential candidates during the election campaign. Mr. Ondo Edu was defeated in the run-off for the Presidency by Francisco Macias Nguema, who will be the first President of the new Republic. (c. September 1968)
