Secretary-General Meets the Iraq Advisory Group
Caption Description
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (left) formed a group of 17 countries as an advisory body that met for the first time today. Mr. Annan told the 17 ambassadors he would present the Security Council with a report within a week on a role the United Nations could play in Iraq. He also said he would name an
interim chief representative for Iraq shortly and a new special representative early in the new year to replace Sergio Vieira de Mello, killed in the attack against U.N. headquarters in Baghdad on Aug. 19. The seventeen countries that comprise the Iraq Advisory Group are: Angola, Chile, China, Egypt, France,
Germany, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Syria, Turkey, United Kingdom, and United States of America.
