Security Council Expresses Intention to Address Mine Action in Peacekeeping Mandates
Caption Description
Citing the long-term consequences of landmines and unexploded ordnance on peace and security, the Security Council this afternoon expressed its intention to address mine action in the mandates of peacekeeping operations when appropriate. Adopting presidential statement, read out by its President of the Security Council for the month of November, Ismael Abraao Gaspar Martins of Angola, the Council also urged all parties to armed conflicts to abide by their mine-related commitments, to cooperate, to the fullest extent possible, with mine-risk education and mine-clearing activities, and to ensure that abandoned stockpiles were adequately guarded or destroyed.
