International Day of Peace Observance
Caption Description
The General Assembly, in September 2001, decided that, beginning in 2002, the International Day of Peace should be observed on 21 September each year as a day of global ceasefire and non violence. Today also marks the one-month anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United Nations compound in Baghdad, Iraq on 19 August 2003, in which twenty-two staff members perished.
Julian R. Hunte, President of the fifty-eighth session of the General Assembly, speaks at today's ceremony. At left is Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
