Headline Press Conference on the Reconstruction Needs of Liberia
Caption Description A press conference was held today at UN Headquarters on the reconstruction needs of Liberia. Representatives from 96 countries and 45 organizations attended the two-day International Reconstruction Conference for Liberia to express their support for the reconstruction of Liberia. A team comprising representatives from the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, non-governmental organizations and the National Transitional Government of Liberia has been working for the past two months to assess the country's needs. It estimated that $488 million in assistance will be required for priorities ranging from demobilizing combatants and helping them return home, get schooling and find jobs, to organizing elections in 2005, rebuilding roads, restoring electricity, reopening schools and health clinics, and stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Left to right: Andrew S. Natsios, Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, Charles Gyude Bryant, Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia, Mark Malloch Brown, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, and Tom Kitt, Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights of Ireland and representing the European Union Presidency, at today's press conference.
