Headline Inaugural Robert Burns Memorial Lecture on the "State of the World and Brotherhood of Man"
Caption Description The inaugural Robert Burns Memorial Lecture on the theme of the State of the World and Brotherhood of Man was delivered by Secretary General Kofi Annan at a gala dinner in the Delegates Dining Room at UN Headquarters. The event was hosted by Emyr Jones Parry, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations. The dinner also featured music from Scotland featuring Caledon, the popular three Scots tenors, and two of Scotland's Celtic musicians. Robert Burns was born in 1759 in Scotland and lived for a mere 37 years. Yet, in that short time he left a wonderful legacy of literature and song, rich in humour, pathos and love. One of his most famous songs is Auld Lang Syne.

Jim Wallace, Deputy First Minister and Enterprise Minister of the Scottish Executive, at the Robert Burns Memorial Lecture.
