Headline International Reconstruction Conference on Liberia Seeks $488 M to Rebuild Liberia
Caption Description Secretary-General Kofi Annan today appealed to the international community to support Liberia in its efforts to rebuild after a devastating 14-year civil war, ensuring peace and stability not only in the West African country but throughout the region as well. ""Let us seize this opportunity to end a long-running nightmare that has disgraced humankind. Let us consolidate the peace, and make the peace process irreversible,"" the Secretary-General said in opening remarks to the second day of the International Conference on the Reconstruction of Liberia. A team comprising representatives from the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, non-governmental organizations and the National Transitional Government of Liberia has been working for the past two months to assess the country's needs. It estimated that $488 million in assistance will be required for priorities ranging from demobilizing combatants and helping them return home, get schooling and find jobs, to organizing elections in 2005, rebuilding roads, restoring electricity, reopening schools and health clinics, and stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Left to right at the podium: Jacques Paul Klein, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Liberia, John D. Negroponte, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Mark Malloch Brown, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, and Chair of the United Nations Development Group, Charles Gyude Bryant, Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia, and Tom Kitt, Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights of Ireland, and representing the European Union Presidency.
