A participant of a townhall meeting - held as part of the sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women - greets a UN staff member prior to the beginning of the townhall.
The townhall, moderated by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), served as an opportunity for civil society representatives to engage with Secretary-General António Guterres and his senior leadership on topics pertaining to gender equality and the work of the UN.
Maryam Bular Hasan, Poet, shares a poem at the Summit of the Future Action Day Two session titled “Dismantling patriarchal power structures”. Action Day 2, which coincides with the International Day of Peace, focuses on three priority themes: A Digital Future for All; A Peaceful Future for All; and A Sustainable Future for All.

The Summit offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity for change. It will pave the way to a better tomorrow, one that we can only shape together. In support of this vision and these objectives, the Secretary-General of the United Nations convened the Summit of the Future Action Days on 20 and 21 September 2024 to generate additional opportunities for the engagement of all actors.

Headline The Voluntary Fund for the United Nations Decade for Women
Caption Description Woman carrying firewood in Segou. Disadvantaged women world-wide are locked into a lifestyle of exploitation. The Voluntary Fund for the United Nations Decade for Women, established in 1975, is trying to improve their lot through projects implemented on a village level. One such project is the introduction of a smoke-free, fuel-efficient wood stove for cooking. While reducing the time consuming task of wood gathering, it limits at the same time the severe environmental impact traditional cooking methods, where almost 90 per cent of the heat is lost, have had on the drought-stricken area.
