With an area of 735,865 square miles and a population (UN est. 1970) of 121,200,000, Indonesia, formerly Netherlands East Indies, is the world’s largest archipelago, lying along the Equator southeast of Asia and north and northeast of Australia. Indonesia comprises about 3,000 islands, the five largest being Java (one of the most densely populated areas in the world with 1,000 persons to the square mile), Sumatra, Kalimantan (most of Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and West Irian (west half of New Guinea). Many races are included, the principal ones being Achinese, Bataks, Menangkabaus, Javenese, Sundanese, Madurese, Balinese, Sasaks, Menadonese, Buginese, Dayaks, and Papuans. The capital, called Batavia by the Dutch, is Djakarta, on the island of Java. Indonesia is one of the richest countries in natural resources, while agriculture occupies 80% of the population.
