A participant of a townhall meeting - held as part of the sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women - greets a UN staff member prior to the beginning of the townhall.
The townhall, moderated by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), served as an opportunity for civil society representatives to engage with Secretary-General António Guterres and his senior leadership on topics pertaining to gender equality and the work of the UN.
Maryam Bular Hasan, Poet, shares a poem at the Summit of the Future Action Day Two session titled “Dismantling patriarchal power structures”. Action Day 2, which coincides with the International Day of Peace, focuses on three priority themes: A Digital Future for All; A Peaceful Future for All; and A Sustainable Future for All.

The Summit offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity for change. It will pave the way to a better tomorrow, one that we can only shape together. In support of this vision and these objectives, the Secretary-General of the United Nations convened the Summit of the Future Action Days on 20 and 21 September 2024 to generate additional opportunities for the engagement of all actors.

Headline Human Settlements - The Places Where People Live and Work
Caption Description One of the main purposes of the UN Conference-Exposition on Human Settlements to be held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 1976, will be to bring to the world’s attention the nature and relative importance of the problems of human settlements against a background of widespread concern for the whole of our earthly environment – natural and man-made. Two of the most critical problems of society today – made increasingly urgent by the rapid rise in the world’s population – are the shortage of adequate housing and deterioration of the conditions under which people live and work. Many cities, particularly in the poorer countries of the world, are unable to provide adequate housing, food, sanitation, work and other essential services for all the people flocking to them in search of a better life. Rural settlements are being abandoned and neglected. Urbanization is not an evil in itself. The process can be guided and converted into a positive factor in development. Economic development and an improvement in the quality of human life need not be competing alternatives. The UN Vancouver Conference will endeavour to stimulate thinking along those lines.
