Russian Federation Foreign Minister Presents Gift to Secretary-General
Caption Description
Gift presented by Igor S. Ivanov, Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The gift was presented at the February 5th luncheon at UN Headquarters, sponsored by Germany in honour of the Foreign Ministers attending the Security Council session on Iraq earlier in the day.
As shown, the bear walks the high wire, delicately balanced between War and Peace, with five balls each marked by the names of the permanent members of the Security Council: Russian Federation, France the People's Republic of China, United Kingdom, and the United States. The arc holding balls says "Security Council". On the bear's ears it says ""Sec-Gen"" for Secretary-General. In Latin, along the base, it reads, ""Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God"". If any of the balls are removed, the bear and the object it hold will fall.
