Headline Memorial to the Fallen Commemorates UN Day
Caption Description Two memorials dedicated to United Nations staff killed in the course of their duties were unveiled today to mark UN Day, the annual event celebrating the birth of the organization in 1945. In New York, Secretary General Kofi Annan paid tribute to his fallen colleagues during the ceremony to open a memorial located in a wooded section of the headquarters' North Garden. The Memorial was funded from the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize award to the United Nations peacekeeping forces, the Memorial has as its centrepiece a wall of crystal glass with the words, ""Remember here those who gave their lives for peace"" inscribed in the six official languages of the Organization. A bubbling fountain in the centre of the Memorial projects sound into the space.
Jean-Marie Guehenno, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, and Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and United Nations Messenger of Peace, at today's unveiling ceremony.
