Headline Third UN Conference on Law of the Sea in Caracas

Caption Description The Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea in Caracas, Venezuela, is at present being attended by delegates of more than 140 States, and is scheduled for a 10-week session from 20 June to 29 August 1974. The Conference has before it a complex agenda which includes the reach of States' political and economic claims beyond their coastlines, the exploitation of oil and other underwater mineral resources, fishing rights and curbs on pollution. Its mandate from the UN General Assembly is to decide what changes if any are needed in the 1958 Geneva Conventions adopted by the First UN Conference on the Law of the Sea and determine what new rules are needed in order to draw up a comprehensive international Convention to regulate the use of the ocean and its resources with justice and equity for all.
