The Human Environment - New Challenge for the United Nations
Caption Description
More than twenty years ago, the potential perils to the human environment were stressed at the first world scientific conference convened by the United Nations - the Scientific Conference on the conservation and Utilization of Resources, held at Lake Success in 1949. Two decades later, there is universal concern over the critical condition of the environment and the adverse effects which are manifest on the earth and in its atmosphere. The international community, through the United Nations General Assembly, has decided to seek action at all levels - from international to local - to protect and improve the human environment by convening a United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, to be held in Stockholm in June 1972. Some of the suggested plans and proposals to go before the Conference are: collection and monitoring of pollution levels; Exchange of information; study of the effect of environmental legislation; Setting of international standards or limits for chemical, physical and ecological contaminants; Promotion of remedial scientific research; Formulation of national environmental policies to ensure optimum land use and control of urban sprawl.
This photograph of the Canon Fjord, N.W.T. Canada, displays the grandeur of unspoiled nature in a world which, at the present rate of land consumption, is fast reducing wilderness areas to a few inaccessible regions.
