Head of UNMISS Visits Cluster Munition Clearance Site in South Sudan
Caption Description
A delegation led by David Shearer, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan and Head of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), with representatives from the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the Government of Japan, and the National Mine Action Authority of South Sudan, visited a site in Eastern Equatoria, South Sudan, that is contaminated with cluster munitions to see first-hand how humanitarian mine action can prevent physical harm to civilians, improve access to basic services and help people rebuild their lives in the wake of conflict.
UNMAS humanitarian mine action teams, funded by Japan, have been surveying and clearing a large agricultural area near the Juba Nimule road to ensure that people can safely access humanitarian assistance and resume their daily livelihoods. The Nimule road is the main road for returnees from Uganda. The work will help enable people to travel safely, to resettle in their homes and rebuild their lives.
In this photo Richard Boulter, UNMAS Programme Manager, explains to the delegation the remaining tasks of survey and clearance in the area.
