Headline Refugee Camp Clearance Programme in Elizabethville (Congo)
Caption Description United Nations officials are giving top priority to a remarkable humanitarian operation to liquidate the squalid, crowded refugee camp on the outskirts of Elisabethville, where about 50,000 refugees, mostly Balubas, have been living under UN protection since early last autumn. During the past month, half of the refugees in the camp obtained transportation from the UN for repatriation to the traditional tribal lands of their forefathers, hundreds of miles to the north and northwest, where they plan to begin a new life.

Refugees gather around a UN vehicle from which a social worker announces over a loudspeaker the names of refugees to be evacuated and issues instructions as to the plane, train or truck on which they are scheduled to travel.
