Malala Yousafzai, 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, UN Messenger of Peace and co-founder of the Malala Fund, attends "Spotlight session 5: Advancing gender equality and girls’ and women’s empowerment in and through education” held on the third day of the Transforming Education Summit 2022.

The Transforming Education Summit was being convened in response to a global crisis in education – one of equity and inclusion, quality and relevance. Often slow and unseen, this crisis is having a devastating impact on the futures of children and youth worldwide. The Summit provides a unique opportunity to elevate education to the top of the global political agenda and to mobilize action, ambition, solidarity and solutions to recover pandemic-related learning losses and sow the seeds to transform education in a rapidly changing world.

Headline Seoul's Shoe-Shine Boys School

Caption Description Seoul's Shoe-Shine Boys School (officially known as the Seoul's Vocational Boys School) was-started in 1952 by Pvt. Kwon Ung Pal, a young Korean transferred from a combat unit to help round-up beggar boys and put down thieving.
Kwon soon found out that punishing the boys did not help, and he started to teach them songs and simple lessons. The group grew rapidly and Kwon organized a primary school, which is now housed in tents and makeshift buildings on land belonging to the Korean Soldiers and Police Orphanage. Some 670 children now attend the school; they all are shoe-shine boys, street vendors, newsboys, messengers, etc. Help came to the school from volunteers of the U.N. Women's Guild, in the form of $10 ,000 worth of UNESCO gift coupons to equip a workshop, and from UNKRA, which added $5,000 worth of building materials to this sum.
This picture shows Kwon Ung Pal, now a Sergeant in the Korean National Police with no other duties than caring for the boys and the school, starting an evening class.
