Caption Description Some $25,340 worth of gold, purchased from funds originally donated by 14 governments to the League of Nations to build a press club for the international corps of correspondents assigned to Geneva to report League news, is to be divided equally between the UN Correspondents Association in New York and the similar body of correspondents at the UN European Headquarters in Geneva.
The picture shows Dr. Max Beer (left), President of the UN Correspondents Association, and Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld shaking hands today at UN Headquarters, upon signing an Agreement providing for the disposition of the gold. It was stated that the funds would be used to create and maintain ""clubs or social centers for accredited correspondents"" or to improve existing facilities serving such a purpose. In addition, a sum equivalent to $2,335 belonging to the old Association will also be divided equally between the two correspondents.
