Security Council Hears Proposals for Action on Rhodesia
Caption Description
The Security Council heard proposals for action in view of the unilateral declaration of independence by the Ian Smith regime in Rhodesia. The Council was taking the matter up on the basis of separate request from the United Kingdom Government, 35 African States and 22 African and Asian States, as well as a recommendation from the General Assembly that the Council consider, as a matter of urgency, the situation resulting from the unilateral declaration of independence. At this morning's meeting, the Council heard statements by the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, and by the Foreign Minister of Ghana, and the representatives of the United States, Senegal and Jordan.
Conversing, prior to the meeting, are three members of the United Kingdom Delegation. They are, from left: Michael Stewart, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs; Sir Saville Garner, Head of the Diplomatic Service; and Lord Caradon, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
