Headline Technical Assistance to Yugoslavia: Penicillin Production

Caption Description In cooperation with the Government of Yugoslavia, the World Health Organization (WH0) is carrying out a comprehensive public health project which includes tuberculosis control, endemoepidemic diseases, public health administration, health statistics, maternal and child health and industrial hygiene. The U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) assists in projects to control trachoma and in maternal and child health and has contributed $90,000 towards modernizing a penicillin plant donated to Yugoslavia by the U.N. Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (UNRRA), in order to ensure an increased supply of penicillin which is vital to the entire programme for the control of communicable diseases. The WHO has supplied production experts and is training local personnel in improved production techniques at the plant which has just started operation. Yugoslavia will spend some $500,000 to pay salaries of plant personnel and to make penicillin available, cost-free, to mothers and children throughout the country.
