Headline
Security Council Resumes Suez Debate
Caption Description
At the request of France, the Security Council today resumed discussion of the Suez Canal question. This photograph gives a partial view of the conference room as French Foreign Minister Christian Pineau (2nd from left at delegates' desk) asked for early negotiations for settling the question ""in accordance"" with the six principles unanimously approved by the Council on 13 October last. ""There is no advantage"", he declared, ""in giving Egypt the impression that it can settle down to a temporary ambiguous regime, and thus prompting it to evade an international agreement without which an atmosphere of security will never be re-established in the Middle East"".
Seated at the desk with him are Ambassadors Emilio Nuñez Portuondo (l), of Cuba, and Omar Loutfi (r), of Egypt.
