A participant of a townhall meeting - held as part of the sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women - greets a UN staff member prior to the beginning of the townhall.
The townhall, moderated by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), served as an opportunity for civil society representatives to engage with Secretary-General António Guterres and his senior leadership on topics pertaining to gender equality and the work of the UN.
Maryam Bular Hasan, Poet, shares a poem at the Summit of the Future Action Day Two session titled “Dismantling patriarchal power structures”. Action Day 2, which coincides with the International Day of Peace, focuses on three priority themes: A Digital Future for All; A Peaceful Future for All; and A Sustainable Future for All.

The Summit offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity for change. It will pave the way to a better tomorrow, one that we can only shape together. In support of this vision and these objectives, the Secretary-General of the United Nations convened the Summit of the Future Action Days on 20 and 21 September 2024 to generate additional opportunities for the engagement of all actors.

Headline United Nations Peace keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)
Caption Description The U.N. Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was created by the U.N. Security Council in 1964 in an effort to prevent outbreaks of fighting between the Greek and Turkish communities in the island republic founded four years earlier. It has been in existence ever since. On 15 July 1974 a decade of relative peace on the island was broken when the country's National Guard led by Greek officers staged a coup against the Government of Archbishop Makarios and Turkish troops landed in the Kyrenia area a few days later. On 20 July the Security Council called for a cease-fire and has reiterated the call in subsequent resolutions but fighting between the two communities and their allies has continued. Representatives of Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, the three guarantor powers of Cyprus's 1960 Constitution, meeting in Geneva late in July and early in August, failed to arrive at a formula for peace in the island. Military representatives of the three powers are working closely with UNFICYP on the island in an effort to establish cease-fire demarcation lines. UNFICYP is at present attempting to limit further hostilities and cease-fire violations, and has mounted a relief operation for destitute Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The total present strength of UNFICYP is over three thousand men from Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Two women comfort one another after discovering the death of their loved ones in the village of Maratha. Allegations continue to be made by both sides about atrocities and inhuman treatment. Wherever possible, UNFICYP is investigating.
