Headline Natural Disasters - An Ever-Present Threat
Caption Description Natural disasters – floods, cyclones, earthquakes, droughts etc. – can strike at anytime, anywhere. On an average, 20 major disasters occur around the world each year destroying lives, goods and property. Disaster preparedness, particularly in disaster-prone regions of the world, can do much to lessen the impact of natural disasters. The Office of the United Nations Disaster Relief Coordinator (UNDRO), was set up to coordinate relief efforts within the UN system and assess the amount and type of aid required. An important part of UNDRO’s work is assisting Governments in pre-disaster planning and disaster preparedness.
Transport and communications are often disrupted when disaster hits. In May Pen, Jamaica this bridge was damaged by flooding. [No exact date]
