The first session of the United Nations General Assembly opened on 10 January 1946 at Central Hall in London, United Kingdom. 
Trygve Lie of Norway addresses the General Assembly on the occasion of his formal appointment as first Secretary-General of the United Nations, on 2 February 1946.

On behalf of his father, John D. Rockefeller III presented Secretary-General, Tyrgve Lie, with a check for $8,500,000 for the purchase of the 6-block Manhattan East River site where the United Nations will build its permanent headquarters. Mr. Lie exhibits the check for the East River site. Ceremony took place on the first anniversary of the Security Council in New York.

Headline Secretary-General Receives Key to Palais de Chaillot 
Caption Description From September to December 1948, the Palais de Chaillot, the emblematic building of the 1937 Exposition Internationale in Paris, hosted the third General Assembly of the United Nations.
With the Eiffel Tower in the background, a long shot of the ceremony showing the French Foreign Secretary Robert Schumann handing the symbolic gold key of the Palais de Chaillot to Trygve Lie, Secretary-General of the United Nations.  At the end of the ceremony, Chaillot became an international territory placed under the jurisdiction of the UN.
