Caption Description Children from various schools throughout the United States presenting a gift of ""a thousand cranes"" made out of paper, to Ms. Zohreh Tabatabai, Chief of the United Nations Visitors Service, who was accepting them on behalf of the Secretary-General. According to a Japanese legend, one thousand cranes of peace equals one hope and a child who makes a thousand paper cranes will know happiness in life. The children made the paper cranes and presented them to the United Nations in honour of the International Year of Peace.
