Caption Description
George Bush, Permanent Representative of the United States, this morning presented to the Secretary-General, U Thant, a cheque for $50,000 as the first payment of the United States Government towards its pledge of $200,000 for the United Nations Volunteers programme. The programme, established by the General Assembly in December 1970, is designed to enlist the participation of skilled men and women from both developed and developing countries in development projects assisted by the United Nations family of organizations. The cheque was presented to the Secretary-General by Mr. Bush in a ceremony in the Secretary-General’s Conference Room. Mr. Bush was accompanied by Joseph H. Blatchford, Director of the Peace Corps of the United States.
