The General Assembly concluded its twenty-sixth session at 3:51pm today after appointing Kurt Waldheim, Permanent Representative of Austria, as Secretary-General of the United Nations for a five-year term beginning on 1 January 1972.

Caption Description The Security Council, continuing debate this afternoon on the Secretary-General's report on Namibia, heard a statement by Peter Muehihange, Secretary for Foreign Relations of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO). The Council had agreed previously to a request by Somalia and the Sudan that a hearing be given to Mr. Mueshihange under rule 39 of the Council's rules of procedure.
