Bringing together participants from some 500 indigenous groups worldwide, the Forum is focusing on the theme ""Indigenous Children and Youth"". Women in indigenous costume participate in today's session.

A view of indigenous children from the Embera people, displaced by armed conflict. There are over two million internally displaced persons in Colombia and while forced displacement is always a very difficult experience, it is doubly catastrophic for indigenous communities. Indigenous culture is closely linked to the land and displacement often leads to the total collapse of traditional authority and cultural patterns.

Headline Cultural Heritage and Development
Caption Description Along with the other Andean Pact Governments, Ecuador initiated in the mid-1970's a regional Cultural Heritage and Development project in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Through this project, people learn from their collective past: not only monuments and sites are preserved but also oral traditions, indigenous technologies and local skills of all types are enhanced to maintain cultural values which could be eroded from uncontrolled social and economic progress.
