Caption Description
The contract for $23,809,573 to construct the 39-story Secretariat building, the first of the three main units, is awarded to the firms of Fuller, Turner, Walsh and Slattery, Inc. This is the larges financial operation that the U.N. has ever undertaken.
Here, Secretary-General Trygve Lie signs the contract on behalf of the United Nations. At left, is Mr. Lou R. Crandall, who signed on behalf of the four building firms which combined their resources to form a single corporation for the U.N. project. At right, Wallace K. Harrison, chief of the Headquarters Planning Office.
