Canada Formally Presents Gift for U.N. Headquarters
Caption Description
Secretary-General Trygve Lie today formally accepted gifts for U.N. Headquarters from representatives of three member nations. The donors were Canada, which contributed the seven nickel-silver doors of the General Assembly building; Australia, which gave the lace-wood panelling in the General Assembly Executive Office; and New Zealand, which presented the Rimu panelling on the first floor of the General Assembly.
Seen here, in front of one of the Canadian doors: U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie; Mr. Lester B. Pearson, Secretary of State for External Affairs of Canada, President of the current session of the General Assembly; Mr. Beaupré, Canadian Deputy Minister of Defense Production; and Mr. David M. Johnson, Permanent Representative of Canada to the U.N. Mr. Pearson, in presenting the doors remarked that his country was proud to donate this gift which bore the symbol of Peace, Justice, Truth and Fraternity, the very ideals the United Nations were called upon to uphold.
