Cyprus Signs Convention on Political Rights of Women
Caption Description
Cyprus today signed the Convention on the Political Rights of Women, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1952. The Convention has been in force since 7 July 1954. It provides, notably, that women shall have the right to vote; to hold public office and exercise all public functions; and be eligible to publicly elected bodies, on equal terms with men and without any discrimination. Forty-five countries have now signed the Convention, and 60 have become parties through ratification or accession.
Zenon Rossides, Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, signing the Convention. Looking on are Michael El. Sherifis, First Secretary, Mission of Cyprus to the UN, and C.A. Stavropoulos (right), UN Legal Counsel.
